Mobile Money for the Unbanked (MMU) is a program launched by GSMA in 2009 with the thought of it being a sustainable and scalable approach to providing convenient and affordable financial services to the unbanked and believing that having access to financial services, and somewhere safe to save, greatly improves the lives of the poor.

About the Job:
GSMA - MMU is seeking a Market Intelligence Analyst. S/he will work with the market intelligence manager to design the GSMA global mobile money adoption survey questionnaire, which is sent to all MMU deployments to gather data around their performance. The position is based in London.

Tasks and Responsibilities:


  •     Improve the quality and quantity of mobile money adoption data (by tracking responses, managing the % response rate, cleaning data returns) and build a suitable database to house the data from which it can be analyzed;
  •     Conduct analysis on the data, and gather suggestions/requests for what to analyze from the market intelligence manager as well as the broader MMU team;
  •     Work with the market intelligence manager to write the global report, as well as design the benchmarking reports;
  •     Produce individual benchmark reports for each respondent to the mobile money adoption survey – this may require some level of customization for different respondents;
  •     Manage MMU’s deployment tracker, to ensure all mobile money deployments are accurately represented;
  •     Work with the market intelligence manager to determine the most important hypotheses/research themes that ought to be investigated in more depth, based on initial insights from the global mobile money adoption survey data;
  •     Build a network of contacts within the mobile money industry;
  •     Conduct market visits to better understand new mobile money trends and developments, and gather information that is relevant to advance the learning agenda of MMU;
  •     Work with the market intelligence manager to identify and prioritize market intelligence requirements from all three MMU workstreams - commercial, interoperability, and regulatory;
  •     Disseminate market intelligence outputs to the industry through virtual communications (blog, social media, webinars, etc.) and presentation at industry events;
  •     Work with the market intelligence manager to design and manage internal processes and tools to keep MMU team informed of latest mobile money intelligence and trends.

Qualifications:

  •     Degree in a quantitative field (Maths, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, etc.) is desirable;
  •     Relevant experience from an analytical role or consultancy;
  •     Excellent and demonstrable analytical and mathematical skills;
  •     Ability to translate problems/requirements into research and analysis projects;
  •     Ability to optimally use market intelligence sources as well as conduct primary research;
  •     Demonstrated experience with knowledge management and diffusion of knowledge;
  •     Advanced skills in MS Access and Excel (including pivot tables, lookups, formulae, charts, macros etc);
  •     Ability to maintain, refine, and build models in Excel and Access;
  •     Knowledge of VBA and SQL programming, proficiency with SAS, Powerpoint, statistics, and other business intelligence /data mining tools;
  •     Expertise in mobile money/financial services desirable but not essential;
  •     Fluent spoken and written English is essential. Other language skills (French or Spanish) desirable but not essential.
