Amnesty International is seeking a Researcher/Adviser to lead on the development and implementation of research and advocacy strategies on our right to health work

About the role:

The Researcher/Adviser within the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Team, located in the Global Thematic Issues programme, will provide expert advice and analysis to Amnesty International’s staff in order to maximise the organisation’s impact in this area of our work. Drawing on relevant human rights law, standards, and practice the Researcher/Adviser develops Amnesty’s policy positions and advocacy strategies, whilst contributing to the development of the movement’s strategic goals and responses to human rights issues in this field. Working with country and thematic specialists both in the International Secretariat and sections and structures, the Researcher/Adviser will lead on and conduct research on our right to health work. This will require the organization and undertaking of field research missions, leading specifically on information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis and assessment of relevant human rights concerns, whilst representing Amnesty to government officials, partner organizations and the media. The post holder will write or contribute to the drafting of timely and effective reports, briefings, position papers, correspondence, action materials, press releases, and other internal and external documents in order to implement Amnesty’s agreed strategies. In addition to their main responsibilities the Researcher/Adviser will provide general support to the ESCR Team including cover for colleagues and responding to internal and external queries about our economic, social and cultural rights work.

About you:

You will have specialist expert knowledge of the international human rights legal framework on economic, social and cultural rights, in particular on the right to health, together with the the nature of key human rights concerns, as well as the relevant political, social, legal, economic, cultural, ethnic, racial and gender issues. Your significant experience of undertaking high-quality field research, as demonstrated in a range of publications, will enable you to confidently take the lead on organising and conducting research missions and produce a range of outputs in collaboration with colleagues across the organisation. In particular you should be able to draw on extensive previous experience of undertaking research on issues relating to maternal health and access to sexual and reproductive health services. Your solid background in human rights policy development on the right to health will enable you to play a critical role in shaping our work on this issue. At the same time having a strong awareness and/or track record of gender issues and how they impact on the right to health will definitely be advantageous in this post. Your past experience of advocacy with UN and other intergovernmental bodies, particularly on the right to health, combined with the ability to develop and effectively disseminate targeted advocacy messages and materials will allow you to take a key role in this area of work. This post will require you to have excellent political judgement and strong analytical skills and the ability to think and plan strategically including working in cross-programme teams. Your experience of planning, organizing and prioritising work under pressure and to deadlines combined with first class communication and external representational skills, will mean that you are well equipped to make a major contribution to our right to health work at a critical period in its evolution. You will have outstanding written and verbal English. The ability to work to a high professional level in another language, particularly French, is highly desirable.
